A successful weekend on all fronts for the club last weekend as we completed a double over near neighbours and rivals Moyne Templetouhy.
On Friday night the Junior hurlers got the weekend off to a good start in a tightly contested Mid championship game at home in Gortnahoe in horrendous conditions. With scores at a premium first half goals from Richie Power and Shay Butler were vital as we led by 4 at the break. The free taking from PJ McCormack and Tommy Duggan was enough in the second half to withstand the Moyne Templetouhy comeback and we clung on for a vital win on a score line of 2-8 to 1-10.
With one game to go v Sarsfields we are in a good position to qualify for a Mid semi but will need to win to avoid a possible elimination on points difference.
On to Sunday and it was the turn of our ladies footballers as they also took on Moyne Templetouhy in the County Junior B semi final in Castleliney.
This also turned out to be a tight and tense affair in front of a big crowd.
A Sharon Holohan goal before half time saw the teams head for the dressing room level. The closeness of the encounter continued throughout the second half before Moyne struck for a goal with 5 mins left.
Up stepped Sharon Holohan again to coolly finish off a Trisha Bulfin run and pass to the net, draw game again!
A late goal chance was spurned and Moyne went up the other end to win and convert a free to re take the lead with time up. However the girls dug deep as they had done all day and won themselves a free, Deirdre Dunne kept her nerve to pop it over and send the game to extra time.
Thr girls superior fitness showed in the 2 extra periods and they pushed on to kick their way to a 2-14 to 2-10 win
Well done to the management team of Johnny Guilfoyle, Vinny Ryan, Kevin Slattery and PJ Campion and all the girls involved.
They now face Lattin Cullen in the County final. Time, venue and date to be confirmed
