In what has been a great few weeks for our under 14 footballers they capped it off in style with a 6-9 to 3-3 victory over North champions Borrisokane in Borrisoleigh tonight.
Wins over Jk Brackens and Lattin/Aherlow over the last 2 weeks saw us progress to tonight’s final.
A nervous opening saw us kick away a lot of possession but once we settled the lads started to play some great football, moving the ball well and taking some nice scores giving us a healthy lead at half time.
Borrisokane chopped away at our lead and with 15 minutes to go they had it down to 8 points. This is when our lads showed leadership and the desire to finish the job and a well worked move involving every line of the team was excellently finished to the net by Conor Gleeson. We held this lead to the finish to run out 6-9 to 3-3 winners with a delighted Luke Kavanagh collecting the cup on behalf of his jubilant teammates.
A great performance throughout starting with Goalkeeper Kevin Laffan who couldn’t do much about any of the goals, David Lanigan at full back was strong on the ball and his kickouts were superb all night, alongside him Paddy Norton was his usual lively self and as always first to the ball.
The half Back line of Adam Butler, Liam Hayes and Jason Sinnott was the launch pad for many attacks and each member of it showed hugh work rate to get up and down the pitch with Liam kicking some vital scores when things got tight.
The Midfield pairing of Conor Gleeson & Brandon Webster covered huge ground with both players contributing to the score board.
Luke Doheny in the half forward line has improved immensely throughout the year and like the semi final struck another vital goal tonight, he was well assisted in the half forward line by Luke Kavanagh and Bobby Doheny who also got on the score sheet, Bobby linking play to the full forward line with some silky kick passes and Luke Kavanagh showing why he is captain with several 40 yard runs back the field to foil Borrisokane attacks.
Damien Corbett and Jason Kelly provided huge energy in the full forward line and were constantly showing for possession and when they got it were well able to trouble the Borrisokane rear gaurd.
All 4 subs also played their part too, with Aidan O Gorman kicking a nice point, Lee Norton providing fresh legs and energy to the defence and Darren Ryan and John Hayden also giving some energy up front when introduced.
A special mention to Shane Phelan who was unfortunately away and missed tonight’s game, Shane has put in a huge effort all year.
Thanks to our management team of Keith Corbett, William Coleman & Jamie Moriarty, no pressure for the hurling now lads!
