LAOCHRA GAEL
Congratulations to Albert Stanley who in The Dome on Sunday afternoon last received the Tipperary Laochra Gael Award for 2016 in recognition of distinguished service to the GAA in Tipperary over many years.
Originally from Urlingford Albert has lived most of his life in the parish of Gortnahoe Glengoole and has immersed himself in many local organisations especially the GAA club, having serving as Chairman of its Juvenile Unit for seven years 1989- 1995. Albert is an excellent fundraiser for the GAA Club and has long been the Club’s leading promoter in the Tipperary GAA Clubs Draw. He was elected Lord Mayor of Gortnahoe Glengoole in 1994, as the GAA Club representative, following a very successful campaign when he raised over €12,000 for the Community Association in Gortnahoe.
Being from Urlingford, Albert Stanley would naturally be a follower of the Black & Amber but in 1990 when Gortnahoe Glengoole GAA Club had three players on the Tipperary Vocational Schools team in the All-Ireland Final in Croke Park, Albert put his beloved club first when he cheered Tipperary to victory over none other than Kilkenny, but normality was restored as he was able to cheer his native Kilkenny to victory over Wexford in the NHL final in the day’s second game, surely a unique achievement for a GAA supporter especially living on the ‘Border’ but proving his love and loyalty to his local club.
